Not turn your pain into a healing circle where everybody gets a raise in and a worksheet. No, we are turning pain into stand-up storytelling. We are taking the thing that hurt, finding the angle, cutting the self-pity, adding pressure, adding details, adding jokes, and building a story that walks on stage with a limp and leaves with the room in a headlock. I'm Jesse, tonight's Red Emergency Contact. I keep audiences safe from emotional hostage videos and keep real pain from dying as boring content. If your childhood story needs eight minutes of explanation before anything happens, I'm cutting the cord unless somebody gets hit by a casserole in the first 30 seconds. Here is the truth, pain is not automatically interesting. That one hurts right? Good, sit in it. Pain feels important to you because you lived it. To the audience, pain is only interesting when it becomes behavior, conflict, stakes, surprise, character, and release. Your trauma is not a punchline. Your behavior during the trauma might be. Your family's weird rule about the thermostat might be. The sound your father made when the dishwasher was loaded wrong might be. The stupid object you remember from the worst day might be. The fact that you were crying in a parking lot while still trying to eat curly fries because you had a coupon, that is comedy material. Pain is raw meat, a story is a cooked meal, and some of you are walking on stage throwing raw chicken at strangers and calling it vulnerability. Tonight we are learning the difference. We are covering comic distance, choosing one event instead of your entire autobiography, starting inside the scene, naming location, object, and behavior, building clear character wants and stakes, compression, truthful exaggeration versus fabrication, voices, actouts, making yourself the fool, alternating tension and punchlines using the four colors as story engines, deciding what stays private, turning anger into a precise premise, finding the emotional red line planting callback seeds, ending with changed meaning, and testing and trimming the story for stage. Then I am going to do a full original six to seven minute demonstration story and show you how the machine works in real time. Because a comedy teacher who only explains storytelling without telling a story is like a driving instructor who arrives by ambulance. Let's go. The first rule of painful storytelling, you need comic distance. Comic distance means enough time, clarity, and control to make the event funny without reopening your chest on stage, and asking the audience to hold your organs. If it still owns you completely, write it in a journal, tell it to a therapist, scream it into a pillow, do not bring it to a comedy club and make 60 strangers become unpaid crisis interns. The audience came to laugh. They did not consent to become your emotional cleanup crew. They bought two drinks, not a hazmat suit. Comic distance sounds like this. At the time I thought my life was over. Now I realize I was mostly hungry, broke, and wearing jeans that hated me. That sentence has distance. It says yes, it hurt, but I can see myself in it now. I can see the absurdity. I can see the behavior. I can see the fool. Without distance you say this horrible thing happened and I still cannot believe it. That is not comedy yet. That is a police report with lighting. With distance you say this horrible thing happened, and my response was to alphabetize my condiments like that was going to restore the economy of my soul. Now we have a person doing something stupid under pressure. That is where comedy lives. Second rule choose one event. Not your whole life, not my journey. Not everything that made me who I am, shut up. That is not a story. That is a filing cabinet falling down the stairs. Beginners love to tell autobiography because they are afraid the audience will not understand the pain unless they include the prequel, the sequel, the family tree, the weather, and three cousins who do not matter. No pick one event. One dinner, one phone call, one cleaning job, one hospital waiting room, one breakup text, one bad date, one school pickup, one meeting with a landlord, one Thanksgiving where the mashed potatoes became evidence. A story is not my family never listened to me. That is a theme. A story is I was 13 holding a report card, standing in a kitchen that smelled like burnt toast, and my mother was more upset that I left the cabinet open than that I got suspended. That has a scene. A story is not dating after pain is hard. A story is I went on a first date at a chain restaurant and realized halfway through the appetizer that my nervous system thought mozzarella sticks were a legal deposition. One event gives the audience a handle. A whole autobiography gives them a migraine with pronouns. Third rule start inside the scene. Do not start with throat clearing. Bad opening. So to understand this story, you need to know a little bit about me. No, I do not. I just met you and already I want a refund from your introduction. Start where the pressure begins. I am standing in a grocery store parking lot at 9. 12 p.m. holding a birthday cake that says sorry about the divorce because the bakery lady misheard me. Boom location. Time. Object trouble. We are in. I am at a cleaning job in a rich house holding a toilet brush and the homeowner says, we are very low maintenance. That is when I noticed the dog had its own filtered water fountain and I was drinking from a bottle I found in my truck. That is a scene. Start with the image that makes the audience lean forward. If your first 30 seconds are background, cut them. Background is where momentum goes to become a missing person. Fourth rule name location object and behavior. Location gives the story a floor. Object gives the story a handle. Behavior gives the story a body. Bad I had a fight with my ex. Everybody has. That sentence is a community pool of resentment. Better I had a fight with my ex in the frozen food aisle while holding a bag of peas against my neck because stress gave me a rash shaped like Florida. Now we have place frozen food aisle. Object peas behavior using vegetables as medical equipment. That is a story. Bad my family was tense. Better my family was so tense the remote control had a designated neutral zone on the coffee table. Bad my dad was angry. Better my dad did not yell at first. He cleaned aggressively. You ever see a grown man wipe a counter like the Firmica owes him an apology. Specific behavior is gold. Pain becomes comedy when it has a weird little body movement. The side the cabinet slam the silent dish washing. The way somebody says fine while holding a spatula like a courtroom exhibit. Fifth rule every character must want something. Story is not stuff that happened. Story is people wanting things and being blocked by other people who want other things. In your painful story ask what did I want? What did they want? What did the room want? What did the stupid object want? You want approval? Your father wants control? Your mother wants silence? Your date wants validation?
