Drag it into the parking lot, frisk it for fake confidence, and teach it how to survive five minutes under stage lights without sounding like a nervous, yelp review. Tonight's episode is called Build a Killer 5-Minute Set. Not a collection of jokes, not a vibe, not I'm just gonna talk and see what happens. That is not a set, that is a hostage situation with a microphone. A 5-Minute Set is a machine. It has an engine, a steering wheel, a brake pedal, and one of those tiny little dashboard lights that comes on right before your ego needs roadside assistance. You get 5 minutes to show a room who you are, what you see, why your brain is broken in an entertaining direction, and whether anybody should ever hand you a longer slot. 5 minutes is not short, 5 minutes is a full relationship if you're dating after 45. In 5 minutes you can match, flirt, discover they don't believe in labels, see their bathroom mirror selfie with a ferret, and emotionally move back in with your ex because at least that disaster had furniture. 5 minutes is long enough to kill, 5 minutes is also long enough to prove you have no business owning a ringtone, much less a microphone. So tonight we are building the thing correctly. We are going to choose one clear persona. We are going to build a premise bank. We are going to test jokes like adults, not hoard them like raccoons with Wi-Fi. We are going to open fast, order bits by strength, write transitions that sound like a human being, use callbacks, cut weak favorites, time the whole thing, record it, rehearse it aloud, make clean, PG-13, and filthy versions, recover when a bit dies, and finish with a full original 5-minute sample red Jesse set. And I am going to demonstrate the whole way because comedy teachers who only explain jokes are the worst kind of Jim coach. Do a push up, buddy you first, your whistle has asthma. Let's get into it. First rule, your 5-minute set needs one clear persona and one clear point of view. Persona is not a costume, it is not I wear a hat. A hat is not a personality, a hat is a receipt for insecurity. Persona is the version of you the audience understands quickly. The anxious dad, the furious optimist, the polite criminal, the woman who says she's fine but alphabetizes revenge, the divorced guy who calls healing updating the firmware. The broke entrepreneur who treats quick books like it's a haunted house. For red Jesse, the persona is simple, loud red protector. I'm the guy who wants control because I care too much, yells because feelings are expensive and teaches comedy like I'm diffusing a bomb built out of bad open mic habits. My point of view is, life is chaos, people are delusional, pain gets useful when you give it timing and craft beats confidence every single night. That point of view decides what jokes belong in the set. If your persona is sweet awkward librarian, don't open with anybody here ever fight a landlord in a parking lot with a plunger, unless the librarian has been through some things, then I want the whole hour. If your persona is angry single dad, do not do 10 soft minutes about scented candles unless the candles are ruining your custody schedule. Your 5-minute set should tell the room, here is the lens, now watch me use it. Try this, weak version, I'm bad at dating apps. Everybody says that, that premise has been touched by more thumbs than a public elevator button. Persona version, I'm dating after middle age, which means my profile is less looking for love and more please verify this emergency contact before we get naked. That tells us who you are, older honest, slightly terrified, still trying good. Another weak version, I'm stressed about money. Persona version, I run a small business so I don't have a budget, I have a spreadsheet that quietly judges me until tax season starts chewing through the drywall. Now we know you, you are responsible enough to invoice people and unstable enough to think a spreadsheet has facial expressions, that's a comic. A 5-minute set with no persona is just a drawer full of batteries, maybe something works, maybe it leaks acid on your hand, nobody knows. So before you pick jokes, write one sentence, I am the kind of person who, and I believe the world is, examples, I am the kind of person who overprepairs for disasters that never happen, and I believe every group text is one typo away from war. I am the kind of person who wants romance, but reads restaurant exits first, and I believe dating apps are background checks with emojis. I am the kind of person who started a business to be free, and I believe freedom is just choosing which bill scares you first. That sentence becomes your filter. Now we build the premise bank. A premise bank is not jokes yet, it is raw material, it is every little truth, irritation, contradiction, confession, image, and weird comparison that might become a bit. Most beginners try to write a 5-minute set by sitting down and demanding, be funny now. That is how you get garbage, that is how you end up with airports are weird written in a notebook like you discovered fire. You need inventory. For one week write premises only, no pressure to finish them, just capture. Things you secretly believe. Things you do that make no sense. Arguments you keep having. Places where your actual behavior contradicts your public values. Specific details from work dating, family, tech, money, health, apartments, cars, food, pets, aging, and your own broken little rituals. Specificity is the difference between a joke and a complaint. Complaint customer service is annoying. Premise, customer service has made me prove I'm not a robot so many times I'm starting to root for the robots. At least robots remember my password. Complaint I hate meal prep. Premise, meal prep is just cooking for the saddest version of yourself, five days in advance. Complaint my phone updates too much. Premise my phone says installing important update and every time I accept it moves the button I use most and adds three features for people who take pictures of soup professionally. That is a premise bank. Now here is the red line formula for turning a premise into a real joke. Recognizable truth specific detail wrong turn right arrow hard punch. Recognizable truth the audience knows the feeling. Specific detail you make it yours wrong turn you take the thoughts somewhere unexpected hard punch the sentence lands with surprise and attitude. Let's build one recognizable truth people say just be yourself specific detail that advice is given before dates job interviews and open mics. Wrong turn being yourself is often the problem punch people say just be yourself like that's motivational my entire adult life is a court case against that strategy. Tags escalate be myself that guy bought a treadmill as a personality replacement that guy has three password reset emails from the same website and still thinks the website is the problem. That guy once cleaned his house so fast before company came over he basically gave the clutter witness protection. Now you have a bit set up right arrow punch right arrow escalating tags right arrow call back do not stop at the first laugh new comics get one laugh and walk away like they accidentally found money in a jacket stay there dig that premise has rent to pay. Here is another premise adults are always one tiny inconvenience away from becoming their worst parent. Set up I thought I was emotionally evolved until my printer jammed punch 30 seconds later I was negotiating with plastic like a divorced hostage negotiator. Tag I said don't you do this to me today like the printer had been following my divorce tag then it printed one blank page which is printer language for I heard you and I choose violence call back later that printer has my father's emotional range and my ex's communication style silence jam then one useless page. That's a bit now write a lot of these 10 premises 20 50 most of them will not make the five minutes. That is not failure that is the job the second big rule select only proven jokes your five minutes set is not where you test every darling little joke you personally enjoy that is what open mics are for the five minutes set is where the survivors go. A joke is proven when it gets a real laugh from real humans repeatedly not your friend texting law law means nothing people type law when they are dead inside and trying to end the conversation not your partner saying that's funny your partner wants the evening to continue without a lecture on punchline economy not you laughing at your own notebook of course you laugh you wrote it in pajamas while eating shredded cheese over the sink your standards were compromised. Proven means you set it out loud on stage or in a real social setting and strangers laughed in the spot you intended this is where you become a professional little butcher you cut jokes you love if they do not work your favorite week joke is not your child it is a couch blocking the fire exit move it I know it hurts I have jokes I love that the audience treated like a side quest in attack seminar beautiful sentences smart angles emotional truth no laugh they are dead I bury them with respect and steal their shoes for stronger jokes for a killer five you want about six to eight short bits or three to four bigger bits with tags you do not need 12 topics you need momentum a common beginner mistake is trying to show range here's dating here's cereal here's traffic here's my uncle here's climate anxiety here's socks that is not range that is channel surfing during a seizure a strong five minute set is narrow enough to feel like one person talking and varied enough not to feel like a spreadsheet learned feelings next open with a fast laugh your first joke needs to hit quickly do not open with throat clearing bad opening so yeah a little bit about me I grew up in this place and it was kind of weird but also you know families are complicated no the audience is aging in real time open with who you are and a laugh example I'm trying to become a healthier person which is hard because my body thinks walking past a salad counts as community service or I run a small business so every morning I wake up and play America's worst game show is this profit or just delayed panic or I'm dating again which at my age is basically two people comparing prescriptions until somebody gets brave that opening does three things persona topic laugh no long biography know how's everybody doing unless you have a joke on it hosts can warm the room you have five minutes start the chainsaw a good opening laugh also teaches the audience how to listen to you if your first line is sharp they lean in if your first line is mush they become furniture with opinions now ordering bits by strength and topic you do not just arrange jokes in the order you wrote them that is how toddlers organize cereal a five minute set needs shape here is a simple order one fast opener quick laugh clear persona two strong early bit prove you can write three related bit same world new angle for strongest middle run build trust five more personal vulnerable bit deep in it six callback or topper seven strong closer leave on the biggest laugh or clean emotional hit with laugh do not put your best joke first and then slide down hill for four minutes like a drunk penguin also do not save every strong joke for the end if you spend three minutes weekly building there may be no audience left for your precious closer they'll still be seated but spiritually they are in the parking lot checking if their friend can leave early start strong and strongest but confidence in the middle topic order matters to move from familiar to specific to vulnerable small truth phones update too much more specific my phone change the button I use personal I hate updates because I already feel like my life keeps changing rules without asking me punch at this point my phone and my body have the same policy every morning a new feature hurts that is escalation escalation means the stakes rise the joke gets more specific more wrong more personal or more emotionally loaded do not escalate by just saying a dirty or word filth is seasoning not architecture if you're set is weak adding profanity is like putting hot sauce on printer paper now it is spicy trash adult comedy still needs craft let's talk about laughs per minute laughs per minute or LPM is not a robot law you do not stand there counting laughs like a haunted accountant but you should know if you're five minutes has dead zones for a tight five you want laughs every 15 to 25 seconds at minimum with stronger runs where laughs stack faster that does not mean every sentence is a punch line if every sentence begs for laughter the audience gets tired it feels like a car alarm trying to host trivia you need rhythm set up punch tag breath set up punch tag tag turn short pause new thought listen to recordings mark where laughs happen if 90 seconds goes by with no laugh that is not storytelling that is a wellness podcast with bar lighting but do not become mechanical the goal is not laugh unit laugh unit laugh unit the goal is a natural human voice with jokes landing often enough that the room trusts you a comic should sound alive not optimized if your joke map looks like a corporate sales funnel you are in danger at second 42 I will deploy relatability at second 59 I will activate vulnerability shut up robot tell me about the time you panic but a humidifier and called itself care now transitions transitions are were a lot of five minute sets become weird you do a dating joke then suddenly speaking of my car no nothing was speaking of your car you kidnapped us a transition should feel like your brain naturally move to the next topic there are three easy transition types association transition one idea reminds you of another I'm bad at dating apps because they make me market myself and I already do enough fake confidence in business now you can move from dating to small business emotional transition same feeling different topic that same panic shows up when my phone updates now you move from business panic to tech panic call back transition reuse an earlier phrase to bridge remember that emergency contact energy that is also how I approach home repair now the audience feels rewarded bad transition anyway my neighbor good transition that's the thing about trying to look stable your neighbor can ruin it by owning a leaf blower and confidence now we are with you transitions do not need to be huge they just need to not sound like you dropped your joke cards in a blender next from small truth to vulnerable closer a killer five minute set does not have to be sad but it should reveal something even silly comedy works better when it comes from a human place you can start with a small truth and end with a vulnerable laugh example arc small truth I hate phone updates deeper truth I hate feeling like everything changes without asking me vulnerability that's why I over control dumb stuff closer I don't need inner peace I need one appliance in my house to ask permission before become a smarter than me that tells us something another arc small truth meal prep is sad deeper truth I'm trying to take care of myself vulnerability I don't trust calm because I grew up around chaos closer so now I pack grilled chicken in little containers like I'm smuggling emotional stability through airport security that is a joke with a little blood in it you do not need to trauma dump the audience is not your emergency therapist with a two drink minimum but if you can let them see the wound and then make the wound dance they remember you comedy is not tell strangers your pain comedy is process your pain until the audience can laugh without feeling like they need to call a hotline now callbacks callback is when you bring back an earlier joke phrase image or idea in a new context callbacks make you look smarter than you are which is important because some of us need stage lighting to hide the fact that our financial plan is maybe next week example earlier phrase emergency contact before we get naked later in business bit that's also how I invoice clients now before I clean anything I need to do it I need to pay my info access code and an emergency contact in case your baseboards start flirting later in tech bit my phone update asked for permission to track activity across apps but I don't even let dating apps track activity across pants callback placement matters do not call back too soon if you repeat the phrase immediately it feels like you forgot you already said it do not call back too late if the audience cannot remember it five minutes set a good callback can land around minute three or four then again at the closer if it earns it rule a callback must add a new joke repetition alone is not a punchline repetition alone is what toddlers do in airports until every adult considers faking a medical emergency next trimming to exactly five minutes this is the part that hurts your first draft will be too long it always is you think it is five minutes it is eight minutes and 40 seconds because you pause to explain your own joke like a museum tour guide for your insecurity you must time it out loud not in your head in your head you are fast charming and everybody respects your pauses in real life your mouth takes detours record yourself use a timer read the set as performed with pauses for laughs if it runs six minutes do not talk faster talking faster is not trimming it is panic with diction cut cut every set up word that does not create the punch cut repeated ideas cut explanation after the laugh cut the week tag that makes the strong tag feel lonely cut your favorite clever sentence if it slows the room here is a bloated set up I've been trying to get healthier lately which is something I think a lot of people can relate to because as you get older you start noticing your body changes in weird ways and you have to make different choices that is a sleeping pill with shoes trim the I'm trying to get healthier because after forty five your body stops sending warning signs and start sending invoices better bloated I downloaded a budgeting app because I wanted to manage my money better but the app kept sending me notifications that made me feel bad about my spending trim the I downloaded a budgeting app now my phone doesn't ring it costs like it saw my debit card naked specific wrong punch now rehearsing allowed a joke is not finished until your mouth can do it some lines look great on the page and die in the throat they have too many syllables weird consonants or a punch word buried in the middle like a car key and couch cushions read it aloud perform it standing up hold something like a mic record it listen back you will hear where you sound written sounding written means the sentences technically correct and socially dead nobody on stage should say I find this frustrating because unless the next word is a surprise say how you actually talk written I have difficult to do it. I have to maintain a consistent wellness routine stage I bought vitamins and immediately acted like I had joined a monastery written technology updates cause me anxiety stage every time my laptop updates I feel like I left my apartment and came home to find the furniture speaking French until the set feels memorized but not embalmed. You do not want to sound like you are reading invisible cue cards. You want to sound like you just thought of it, but better than anybody actually thinks. That is the trick. Now recording and timing. Every open mic is data. Every set is a lab. The audience is not judging your soul. They are telling you where the electricity is. Record every set. Yes, you hate hearing your voice. The speaker hates hearing their voice. Your recorded voice sounds like your skull filed a complaint. Record anyway. After the set, mark. Where did laughs happen? Where did laughs not happen? Did the opening hit? Did a tag beat the main punch? Did a transition lose them? Did you talk over laughs? Did you rush? Did you say, uh, like your brain was buffering? Did one joke get agroned but also a laugh? Did the closer actually close? Do not rely on memory. After a set, your memory is drunk on adrenaline and lies like a casino brochure. Write down the truth. A laugh mark might look like. Zero, twelve opener laugh. Zero, twenty seven tag bigger. Zero, fifty five silence set up too long. One twenty punch worked. One thirty two tag failed. Two zero five transition awkward. Three ten call back strong. Four forty five closer okay? Not great. That is how a set improves. Now testing at open mics. Open mics are not shows. They are comedy gyms with worse lighting and one guy who brings a guitar nobody requested. Use them correctly. Do not judge a joke from one bad mic. One room can be weird. Use the audience's three comics a bartender and a man in cargo shorts eating fries like he lost a custody battle to catch up. Test a joke multiple times. But do not ignore patterns if the joke dies three times in different rooms the joke is telling you something. Listen. Do not blame the audience every time. They didn't get it. Maybe or maybe you built a joke that requires a diagram, a childhood flashback and a minor in your personal mythology. Make the premise clearer move the punch sooner at a specific detail change the angle cut the weak tag try again. When a joke works tag it but only tag proven premises. Do not build eight tags on a dead premise that is decorating a house with no foundation. Now it has curtains and structural depression. If the base laugh is strong ask what else is true? What is the worst version? What is the opposite? What specific image makes it funnier? What would I never admit? What sentence could only I say? Example base joke. I bought a standing desk because I wanted to feel healthier while ignoring emails at altitude. Tags. It didn't make me productive. It just made my procrastination ergonomic. Now when I avoid work my calves are involved. My laptop is at eye level like it deserves respect. It does not. It has seen my search history. That is tagging a proven premise. Now we need to talk about cutting beloved weak jokes. This is where comics become adults. You will have a joke you love because it is clever. It has a beautiful phrase. It reveals something real. It makes other comics nod. It does not make normal humans laugh. Cut it. A five minute set is not a museum for your almost jokes. You can save it in a file called maybe later. That file is where dreams go to wear sweatpants. Cutting a beloved weak joke does not mean it is worthless. It may become a transition. It may become a tag later. It may belong in a longer show, but it does not belong in the tight five. The tight five is a knife. If the blade has sentimental spaghetti stuck to it, clean the blade. Now clean PG-13 and filthy versions. This is important. You should be able to do your five in different rooms without weakening the craft. A clean version is not just your filthy set with the swear words removed. That leaves holes. That is like taking the booze out of a cocktail and serving wet garnish. Clean version requires sharper images. Filthy version can be more explicit, but it still needs jokes. Use a premise dating after middle age. Clean Dating after 45 is two people trying to be romantic while quietly evaluating joint pain and parking availability. PG-13 Dating after 45 is sexy until both people make the same noise standing up from the couch. Filthy Dating after 45 is still hot, but now for play includes checking if the mattress has enough back support for two bad decisions. All three work because the craft is the same, recognizable truth, specific detail, wrong turn, punch. Another premise budgeting app. Clean My budgeting app sends notifications like a disappointed school counselor. PG-13 My budgeting app saw one delivery order and started using the tone a nurse uses before bad news. Filthy My budgeting app looked at my debit card and basically said, you can't afford shame this expensive. Filthy is not automatically funnier. Sometimes clean is stronger because it forces precision. Do not use filth as a crutch. Use it as a club. Now emergency recovery when a bit dies. Every comic needs recovery tools. A joke will die, not maybe. It will. Sometimes because it is bad, sometimes because the room is weird, sometimes because a glass breaks, sometimes because one guy coughs at the exact punch word like he was paid by your enemies. Do not panic. Do not insult the audience immediately. If you bomb and then attack them, you are not edgy. You are a waiter yelling at soup. Recovery options. Option one quick acknowledge. Okay, that joke left the building before I did. Fair will put that one in witness protection. That joke sounded better in the car where I am apparently a legend. Then move on. Option two self-dag. If a bit dies, I like that joke because it teaches humility and damages momentum. Option three return to a proven joke. Have a safety line or call back ready. See, this is why my emergency contact refuses to answer. Option four shorten the next setup. After a death do not start a long story, the audience needs a quick win, give them a fast laugh. Do not explain the joke. Explaining a dead joke is taxidermy. Now the corpse is upright and everybody is uncomfortable. Now let's build an actual five minute set from scratch. We need persona. Red Jessie, loud protector, small business chaos, aging, tech, control issues, vulnerable closer. In a view, I try to control everything because chaos raised me, but life keeps updating without permission. Premise bank. Trying to be healthier after middle age. Phone updates changing everything. Small business money panic. Dating after middle age. Cleaning business customers wanting miracles. Rehorsing confidence while feeling scared. Safety contacts. Control as a trauma souvenir. Trying to turn pain into comedy. Now we select only strong style jokes. For this sample, I'll build them as if they are stage tested, tight and ready. Order one fast opener about being red Jessie and control. Two health aging quick bit. Three business panic bit. Four dating after middle age bit. Five tech update control bit. This vulnerable turn chaos taught me control. Seven call back and closer. Emergency contact updates microphone. Before the final sample, let me show how we trim. Long thought. I think I became controlling because when you grow up in a chaotic environment, you learn to scan every room for danger and then later in life people call that being intense. Stage version. I'm not controlling. I'm just what happens when a childhood fire alarm grows up and gets a calendar app. That is a joke. Long thought. I run a cleaning business and customers often underestimate how much work is involved. Stage. I run a cleaning business. People say it's not that bad. Then open a closet like they're releasing a family curse. Good. Long thought. Dating later in life is complicated because people have baggage. Stage. Dating after 45 is not baggage. It's a full storage unit with a candle on top and a profile that says no drama. Good. Now the final sample five minute set. This is written as a standalone red Jesse tight five. It is original. It has adult language. It has persona point of view set up punch tags call backs escalation and a closer. Perform it loud fast with controlled pauses. Have laughs room. Do not sprint through the tags. Keep the anger playful not bitter. Red protects. Red roasts because red cares. I'm red Jesse. I'm not controlling. I'm just what happens when a childhood fire alarm grows up and gets a calendar app. People say you need to relax. I am relaxed. This is my relaxed. My nervous system is wearing a robe but it still has a clipboard. I'm trying to become healthier because after 45 your body stops giving warning signs and start sending invoices. I used to wake up sore and think what did I do now I wake up sore and think what did I agree to in my sleep. I bought vitamins. That's how you know a man is scared young guys by cologne older guys by magnesium and start saying this one's for inflammation like they're loading ammunition. I don't even want abs. I just want to bend over and not make a noise that tells the furniture my secrets. I run a small business too so my whole life is health invoices and pretending I understand what quarterly estimate means. Running a business sounds empowering until you realize you are the boss and the employee and both of you are disappointed. Every morning I check my bank account like it might have matured overnight. It never does. It just sits there like we both know what you ordered. I have a budgeting app now. That app doesn't notify me it clears its throat. It sees one delivery order and uses the tone a nurse uses before bad news. Hey, when you have a second we should talk about the tacos. And I run a cleaning business which means customers call me and say it's not that bad. Then they open a closet like they're releasing a family curse. It's mostly organized. No it's not. Your laundry has leadership. Your shoes have formed a union. There is one box in the corner labeled MISK which is adult language for I surrendered in 2019. But I understand my own house gets messy too. The difference is I panic clean before company comes over so fast I don't clean I relocate evidence. That's adulthood. You don't solve problems. You move them into a nicer basket. Dating is the same way. I'm dating after 45 which is basically two people asking are you emotionally available while both of us have a garage full of red flags under a tarp. At this age dating is not baggage. It's a full storage unit with a candle on top and a profile that says no drama. I don't even ask what are you looking for anymore I ask who is your emergency contact and are they tired. Because before we get intimate I need to know who to call if your unresolved attachment style starts doing parkour in my kitchen. And everybody says they want honesty. They do not. They want honesty that arrives showered edited and not during dinner. Real honesty is ugly. Real honesty is I like you but my nervous system has opened a second location in the parking lot. That's why I hate phone updates. My phone updates the same way life does at night without consent and by mourning the buttons I trusted have moved. I wake up and my phone says we improved your experience. No you didn't. You hid the flashlight and added a journal app for people who describe oatmeal as a journey. Every update takes one useful thing and buries it under three features for people who film themselves drinking water. My phone asked would you like to enable focus mode but if I had focus mode I would not be arguing with a rectangle in my underwear. And the passwords every website says create a strong password. I did then you made me change it now my strongest password is just my original password having a breakdown. It's got a capital letter a number a symbol a childhood wound and the name of the street where I lost trust. Then it says we sent a code to your email great so to enter one locked room I have to enter a second locked room guarded by the first locked rooms drunk cousin. This is why I try to control things I used to think control was a personality flaw now I think it's a souvenir from chaos. Some people collect magnets from vacations I collect backup plans from every time life kick the door open without knocking. So yeah I over prepare I check the exits I read the fine print I bring chargers cash water and the emotional posture of a man who has been disappointed by both people and printers. You ever argue with a printer that is when you meet your real self therapy asks how do you feel a printer jam asks who are you when society disappears. I told my printer don't do this to me today like it had access to my calendar and a grudge. Then it printed one blank page which is printer language for I heard you and I choose violence that's my whole life phone updates budgeting apps dating profiles printers everything keeps asking me to adapt and I'm trying I really am because the truth is I don't want to control everything I want one safe thing to stay where I left it. One button one person one password one drawer in the house that does not become a crime seen by Thursday. But life does not work like that life updates people change bodies creek businesses scare you dating gets weird closets develop leadership printers choose violence. So I do the only thing that ever made sense to me. I take the chaos put a mic in front of it and make it pay rent. Because if life is going to keep updating without permission fine I'll update to but I am keeping the old password it has a capital letter a number a symbol and one emergency contact who already knows I'm a lot. Thank you that's my time.\n\n[THAT WAS ALL JOKES. None of it was real. Every person, company, movie, advertisement and event in this show is made up.
